How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in Foodpreneur Lab’s Start and Scale Advisor-Led Support Paths for Black food entrepreneurs (foodpreneurs).

[THIS APPLICATION IS NOW CLOSED]  If you are a Black foodpreneur in the regions we have identified for Cohort 2 andare a Canadian Citizen or a Permanent Resident and you need individualized support to launch a new or scale an existing food product, then this project, funded by the Government of Canada is for you!

Apply for the Start Path if you are pre-revenue and you do not yet have a prototype for your brand new product.  This Path is for new food entrepreneurs who have little to no food business knowledge.

Apply for the Scale Path if you already have a food product in the market, but you need support to reach your next level of growth.

Am I eligible to apply?

In order to be eligible for Cohort 2 you:

  • Must be a Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident.
  • Must identify as Black.
  • You must live or have your business registered in one of the regions identifed below (please see Start | Scale below for more details).
How long is it?
Both Start and Scale Advisor-Led Support Paths are a 9-month commitment. The Paths start on April 4, 2022 and end on December 30, 2022.
What is the time commitment?
Our sole focus is on helping you develop your business and product by providing you with guided, personalized support. Since this process is all about working on your business we require your complete commitment to participate. You will receive invaluable one-to-one support from a number of industry experts who guide you through every single business stage.

As such, you can expect to commit a minimum of 15-20 hours for each topic/stage. Please ensure you are available and ready to commit the required time for each Path.

When do the Paths start and end?

Whether you are in Start or Scale, each Path is a 9-month commitment. 

Cohort 2 Participants start on April 4, 2022 and end on December 30, 2022.

What resources do I need to participate?

In order to participate, participants must have the following:

  • Computer/Laptop
  • Webcam
  • Microphone

Sessions will be run digitally through Zoom and scheduled with calendar invites. 

A strong internet connection is required to stay engaged in this program.

All in-kitchen participation (Start Path only) must be completed within Ontario, Canada.  Hence, you must commit to being in Region, Province, Country during the in kitchen segment in order to be accepted into the Start Path.

Required for the in-kitchen portion (Start Path only):

  • Lab Coat 
  • Other safety equipment/clothing (if required)
Can I switch FROM start To scale?

No.  If you are currently a Participant in our Start Path and wish to be considered for our Scale Path, you must first successfully complete the Start Path before applying for the next available Scale cohort.

Can I apply for both start and scale?

No. If you are unsure as to which Path you should apply to, please apply for the path you feel aligns best with your current business needs. Each application will be assessed for which Path is the best fit.

Start

You should apply for the Start path if,

You are a pre-revenue Black foodpreneur and have an idea you want to turn into a prototype

The purpose of the the Start Path is provide Participants with a foundational business structure and prototype to launch their food product.

The Path goal is to ensure Participants will be able to begin entering retail spaces and making revenue.

  4. Food Safety (COVID-19 inclusive)
  5. Production Time in Commercial Kitchen
  6. Product Prototype
  7. Brand/Product Video
what documents will I need to provide?

As a Participant in the Start Path you will be required to provide the following documentation (details and timelines will follow if you are selected for Cohort 2).

  • Signed Participant Agreement
  • Business Registration/Incorporation
  • Liability insurance
  • Food Handler’s Certificate
  • End of Path Report

Scale

You should apply for the SCALE path if,

You are a Black foodpreneur who is already selling product(s) in the market and are ready for commercialization or product diversification.

The purpose of the Scale Path is provide Participants with product development guidance to scale their recipe, packaging, product science, business and marketing strategy.

The Path goal is to support the Participants’ ability to expand distribution, make decisions about co-packing and become investment ready.

  5. Distribution and Supply Chain
  6. Human Resources for Food Production at Scale
  7. Brand/Product Video
what documents will I need to provide?

As a Participant in the Scale Path you will be required to provide the following documentation (details and timelines will follow if you are selected for Cohort 2).

  • Signed Participant Agreement
  • Business Incorporation
  • Liability insurance
  • Food Handler’s Certificate
  • HACCP certificate (course provided as a part of the Path)
  • End of Path Report

We will be prioritizing applications from the bolded regions for Cohort 2.
