YRASP (YORK REGION AGRI-FOOD START-UP PROGRAM)
Growing local food-based businesses and empowering equity-deserving and Indigenous entrepreneurs.
Aspiring food entrepreneurs in York Region can access hands-on support and resources through the Agri-Food Start-Up Program, transforming innovative ideas into thriving businesses.
In collaboration with Foodpreneur Lab, Syzl, York Region Food Network and Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation, the program aims to break down systemic barriers in the agri-food sector and encourage inclusive economic growth across the Region.
COHORT 2 APPLICATIONS ARE NOW OPEN!
Highlights of the Agri-Food Start-Up Program include:
Tailored entrepreneurial support: Participants will receive mentorship, regulatory guidance and training in food safety, operational efficiency and business planning led by Foodpreneur Lab
Access to commercial kitchen spaces: Entrepreneurs will have access to subsidized commercial-grade kitchens through the Syzl platform. These kitchens are equipped with AI-driven tools to optimize production and reduce waste
Culturally relevant Indigenous Support: Elders and Advisors from the Chippewas of Georgina Island will mentor Indigenous participants, incorporating traditional knowledge and practices into sustainable business models
Community engagement and research: York Region Food Network will conduct consultations to identify systemic barriers and gather feedback to ensure the program remains responsive to the unique needs of local equity-deserving and Indigenous entrepreneurs

AM I ELIGIBLE TO APPLY?
In order to be eligible, you:
Identify as Indigenous or a member of an equity-deserving group (visible minorities, persons with disabilities, women, 2SLGTBQI+)
Canadian or Permanent Resident and a reside in Ontario
18 years or older
Demonstrate readiness to learn through coaching, workshops and peer mentorship
Have a food product concept or early-stage product with plans to launch or scale within 6 months
Be in the pre-revenue or early-revenue stage
Commit to completing the full self-paced 26-week online program (4 to 8 hours per week).
Disclaimer: Preference will be given to applicants that are based in York Region including the Chippewas of Georgina Island.

If chosen as a participant for YRASP, you will be required to provide the following documentation (details and timelines will follow if you are selected)
Signed Participant Agreement
Business Incorporation (if applicable)
Liability insurance (if applicable)
Food Handler’s Certificate (before in-kitchen)

York Region Agrifood Start-Up Program is 14-weeks.

You can expect to commit approximately 4-6 hours per week. Please ensure you’re available and ready to dedicate the time needed to get the most out of this experience.

In order to participate, participants must have the following hardware:

Webcam
Microphone
This is necessary to meet with advisors and access digital resources
A strong internet connection is required to stay engaged in this program.

We have non-disclosure agreements that our team, participants and advisors sign.

Yes, every applicant will be notified whether they are accepted or not.

YRASP will have a total of 2 (two) cohorts.

We have our participants showcase at consumer exhibits, events, and markets through our partners.

This is largely delivered online. Access to the Syzl commercial credits kitchen is in person.
